Just a few random thoughts

Finally we are back up and running. I apologize for the delay between episode 2.7 and 2.8. As I explain in the new episode, life interfered, as did grad school, work, and finally moving the website domain from weebly to bluehost. Hopefully from here on out we will be back on a weekly schedule. The only thing which might ruin it is that I’m having a bit of trouble with episode 9. Hopefully I’ll work through it and power on.

I have seen a TON of “top 10 lists” of the best history podcasts. I have my favorite podcasts, as I’m sure you do. So I thought I’d share a couple of my favorite history podcasts (in no particular order), and shows which aren’t the “usual suspects.”

1. The Age of Victoria podcast. Started last year, this show is just warming up. Chris Fernandez-Packham is not a professional historian, but he really knows his stuff. He takes the time to produce an quality episode once a month, although he does offer mini-episodes from time to time. If you are looking for a good podcast on England, this is one you need to check out. Also, we will be a guest on this show in a future “bonus” episode, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

2. The Brion McClanahan Show. This isn’t a “history” podcast per-se, but McClanahan, a professional historian specializing in US 19th century history, Dr. McClanahan often covers topics in history, ranging from Daniel Webster to graduate school. The show comes out twice a week and is on my must listen to list.

3. When Diplomacy Fails. Listening to this is sheer joy. Zach, in my opinion, is THE Gold Standard when it comes to history podcasting. I know, I know. Every bloody list out there has Mike Duncan on it at the top, or darn close, and I get it. I just think that, for my money, Zach is beyond good. If you haven’t listened to WDF, do yourself a favor and check it out.

4. Historical Controversies. Another of my favorites. The series starts off with a bang, talking about illegal drugs. Yeah, you can’t get more controversial than that! Chris Carlton, a scholar at the Mises Institute, does an amazing job on this one. Another one worth checking out when you aren’t listening to my show. 😉

5. Last, but not least, The History of Witchcraft. I mean, what’s not to like? A podcast on Witchcraft just sounds cool (and I’m jealous I didn’t think of this as a topic!). But it is well done and certainly one which you will enjoy.
